The Guilt that impacts our wellbeing

Lately, I’ve been watching a program that reunites those who have been seperated from their loved ones, due to adoption or through other circumstances.

What I’ve observed in all these people that are searching for their loved Ones is an overwhelming feeling of guilt, that has often lasted for decades greatly impacting their life & the lives of those around them.

While we may not be searching for lost loved Ones, guilt & the feeling of guilt can greatly impact our wellbeing.

So, let’s look at the definition of guilt, it’s;

‘ a feeling of having done something wrong…’

We all feel guilt at some point in our lives, this is normal for those of us who know right from wrong.

And there are many things that may make us feel guilty.

However, guilt & the feeling of guilt can be two very different things.

Let me explain that statement, Guilt is when we have done something wrong & we know it!

Feeling guilty over a wrong doing is normal. And once we rectify that wrong doing the feeling of guilt lifts & the feeling of freedom from that guilt replaces it.

But feeling guilty over things that we did our best at the time is another issue entirely.

My friend, if we did our very best at the time with the knowledge, resources & life experience we had then there is absolutley nothing to feel guilty about!

And yes we may look back now & think things could have been done differently or maybe even better at the time.

But, & this is a big but my friend, we didn’t have the hindsight, life experience or even the resources we have now because put simply hindsight is hind sight!

It’s what comes long after the fact…

This is timely. I love that you wrote about mama guilt. It’s a thing and sometimes takes a while to let go of. So wonderfully spoken.
    Visiting today from Joanne’s

  2. Thank you, Jennifer, for sharing this post with us. I often feel guilty over things that I feel like I could have done better. But in the end, I remind myself that doing your best at times is what matters. Thank you for sharing this post with us at Crazy Little Love Birds link party #6.

  3. you speak truth, Jennifer. and there’s a big difference between the enemy of our souls who loves nothing more than sending us on guilt trips that never end … and the clear conviction of the Spirit concerning sin.

may God help us to quickly discern.

    1. Donna you actually came to mind as I was writing this post this week remembering you in prayer.
My heart goes out to you sweet friend as I too have walked the path with prodigal family members.
It’s a hard breaking road to travel until it turns around, please know that God is working in the situation, although you may not see it at the moment, you will one day.

  4. I read the previous thoughts about mother guilt and thought back about my conversations with my college students in class discussions. They all felt strongly that their failings were theirs, not their parents. God doesn’t want us to be God to our children! He just asks that we be good enough moms.

  5. Thank you, Jennifer for this post. I have experienced Mama guilt and grandmother guilt. Your wisdom is spot on. As always, your writings are encouraging. Blessings, sweet friend!
