Exploring our DNA

Recently, as I’ve sat down with a cuppa for afternoon tea I’ve been watching an English program that helps people find their ethnic heritage through their DNA.

The people in the program come from all walks of life, but one thing they all have in common is that they are seeking more information about their origins & family line.

As they were all either orphaned as young children, in foster care, adopted or grew up in single parent families without any information about their other parental heritage.

It’s a fascinating program as viewers are taken on a journey with each person to find out what their DNA reveals.

But before I share what I’ve learnt from this program, let’s grab our cuppa’s, a treat & get comfy.

I must admit I’m a bit worn out this week, after the big event of last week in Sitting in the Hospital. So today I’ve grabbed a slice of home baked gf Date Loaf & a mug of Russian Caravan tea, its smoky taste compliments the Date loaf perfectly.

You just can’t tell!

In this program, which is really a documentary, there’s a presenter who goes to the home of each person concerned & interview’s them as to why they’re searching for their origins. And to find out what lengths they’ve already taken in their search for answers.

There’s also a Professor of Genetics who does the DNA collection & testing, explaining what they can & can’t find with DNA at this time to each seeker.

Plus the teams of researchers both in the scientific & ancestry communities.

One point that has been so very interesting & the Professor constantly stresses, when people think that their skin colour denotes where they may originate, is that you can’t actually tell from your skin colour where your ethnicity has originated.

As she explains that in each family & people group you get a variety of skin tones & colours. How fascinating!

The professor goes on to explain that while we are visual beings & may think certain skin colours belong to certain ethnic groups the DNA tells a different story entirely.

When I think about my own family, my parents & siblings this is indeed true. For example;

My mother had fair skin & Ebony coloured hair, my Dad had olive skin with dark brown hair, us children; two of us were born with red hair, one with fair skin & the other with olive skin both with freckles. Then the younger two children, one was blonde haired with fairish skin & the other was dark brown hair with light olive skin neither with freckles!

And then I look at my own children & grandchildren, we have a variety of skin & hair colours with our heritage mainly originating from Celtic ancestry.

What was most interesting is that my husband’s daughter did a DNA test recently which revealed that on her paternal side, my husband, there’s Viking heritage.

As soon as I heard this I thought of course he looks like the classic Viking! But there it is again I went visual, however this time it actually aligned! Lol!

What about our Spiritual DNA?

This had me thinking about the Spiritual DNA we all inherit down through our ancestry line & within our respective families.

We know that many x great granny & grandpa, Adam & Eve passed down to us the spiritual DNA of the fall (separation from God).

As we are told in Romans 5:12 the following;

“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man (Adam), and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men (mankind), because all sinned.”

We also know that God promised a way back to Him at the fall through a Saviour & we know that Saviour is His Son, Jesus Christ.

Who turns that inherited spiritual DNA from great Granny Eve & Grandpa Adam into a spiritual inheritance not of man but of the Spirit of God. Which is available to all since Christ’s death on the cross, His resurrection from death & ascension.

Another very interesting promise comes to mind here & one that I claim & have thought about often, I even quote it in our family photo books…

And that’s the following;

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9

Have you ever thought or researched who may have loved God back in your ancestry that God is keeping His promise to?

I have often wondered about this since I was a young woman & recently I’ve found some really interesting things about my spiritual heritage.

God continues to Keep His Promise…

It first began when my maternal grandmother was still alive (who had a great faith in God) I found out that my grandfather’s sister (my great aunt) had been a Missionary to those suffering from Leprosy in the early 1900’s & had died serving them on the Island where she had ministered.

Then recently in researching further into our Family History, I’m compiling a family history book, I found out that our Clan, which was the original Clan in Scotland, turned away from Celtic gods & beliefs accepting Jesus, becoming committed Christians!

That’s going way back to 1036 AD so God indeed is keeping His promise down through our generations!

The legacy of blessing…

How wonderful it is to find this in our family history & how comforting it is to know that God’s blessing will continue down through our family line until Jesus returns.

And as we love God & live faithfully for Him, that we are extending that promise for the generations that may follow! Hallelujah!

Until next time,

Jennifer

  1. Jen, this is so good! And interesting. I’ve seen a similar program here. Maybe it was the same one as I love documentaries and often browse through many. It’s so interesting and encouraging to think about our spiritual DNA isn’t it.

    Thanks so much for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friends this month dear friend.

  4. Dear Jennifer, what an encouraging thought:

    “Have you ever thought or researched who may have loved God back in your ancestry that God is keeping His promise to?”

    I have known about my Grandparents who prayed for their children (my parents) who had strayed, and was always so very blessed. But I had never thought much about those thousands of generations, and their eternal prayers that God is keeping! Oh may I be faithful in the prayers that He asks of me for my children and grandchildren too! Blessings to you!

  5. Love this Jennifer. How precious to consider spiritual DNA. I have played a bit searching out my ancestry and can go back into the 1500’s pretty easily. That puts me in Switzerland on my Dad’s side and Germany before the family left due to religious persecution. My mother’s side were solidly largely English. Both sides have a long history of faith including pastors and worship leaders. I often think about what their prayers for me (as yet unborn) may have been. Blessings, Pam
