Have you thought about just how powerful words can be?
Today we will reflect upon this important topic & the power we all possess through our words, over a delightful cuppa together.
We are enjoying a D Chai Latté, a new tea/coffee blend that I was introduced to a few weeks ago by my youngest daughter!
Do you get disappointed with yourself at times?
I know I do! Especially when I come away from a social gathering knowing I haven’t been as careful or as wise with my words as I should have been.
Don’t get me wrong, its not that my words were nasty, (as being nasty is something I absolutely abhor) curt or negative.
Rather I came away having that sense that my words could have been maybe a little more wiser & affirming. And that maybe I had said too much in the conversation.
Words are extremely important to me.
Did you know that,
Words can actually hold the power of life or death to another’s spirit.
That’s a huge responsibility, don’t you think?
The power of our words
You see words are that powerful! Our words can either speak life or speak death. In other words our speech can build others up or tear them down.
But there are subtleties in our speech that may also speak either life or death. These are tones & the way in which we say our words!
How & what we say always denotes where our heart attitude is at, for Jesus told us in Matthew 15: 18:
“…the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart…”
A time of self reflection
Part of being Jennifer is reflecting upon my actions, reactions & words spoken. This is how I learn from my mistakes, hopefully not to repeat them in the future!
This is not only a legacy from my professional career but also is a very important aspect of my ongoing relationship with my heavenly Father.
You see I want to continue to grow in His image until I step into heaven & that means learning from my shortfalls.
But also not beating myself up over them but focus upon His love & grace for me, giving that same love & grace out to others.
The language of love
Words can also be a love language in fact it’s the top of the list in Chapman’s series on Love Languages.
Words of Affirmation is definitely one of my love languages & how I know this is because it’s the way I first love others.
We often show love in the way we like to be loved.
Did you know that Words are important to God too?
One of the titles given to Jesus is The Word, who is the ultimate demonstration of God’s love to mankind & who brought Creation into being as we’re told;
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
John 1:1
He has also given us His inspired Word, the Bible for our instruction, edification & for the knowledge of His character.
So, what are we creating with our words?
At times when our cognitive abilities may not be at their optimum, ie. when stressed, ill, anxious, weary or exhausted we can be unwise in our words.
I find when I’m tired, weary or feeling unwell it’s best to take the following advice,
“There’s a time for everything under the Sun… a time to be quiet & a time to speak!”
Ecclesiastes 3: 1 & 7b
And this is the mistake I made the other day, I hadn’t heeded this advice as I normally would’ve done.
Not being at my optimum should have signaled that this was a time for me to have been a little wiser & quieter within the conversation.
I’m still a work in progress! As mentioned above I need to apply God’s grace to myself as well as others.
Have you reflected upon your words lately my friend?
Are they bringing life to others in encouragement, wisdom, love & joyfulness?
Or…hurt, sadness, negativity & even death to their spirit?
Until next time,
Jennifer

Jennifer, earlier this morning I was reflecting on the use of my words. I want to be a better steward of the words I speak. May the Lord show us when we are to speak and when we are to refrain. May our words be Spirit led and thus bear fruit, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of those around us. Beautiful to read this morning!
Amen! Thank you for your beautiful prayer sweet friend 💕
I had a post with this same title last month, lol. But a different take–it’s a broad topic. Yes, I often rethink my words after a conversation and wonder if I should have been silent or expressed myself differently. I’m also not as careful about my words when I am tired. I’m glad we’re works in progress and God is patient while we grow.
It is a broad topic Barbara. Yes, I’m glad God is very patient with us too! 😊
Blessed and grateful for special time with family today, Jennifer! ❤ Blessings and love to you and yours… xo
The language of love… Such a beautiful reminder of where our thoughts and words should be. ❤ Thanks, dear Jennifer. Have a beautiful weekend! xo
Thank you Bette, I hope you’re having a lovely Mother’s day sweet friend ♥
We should never, ever, underestimate the power of words. I so agree with you, Jennifer! They can make or break us, both the words we take in and the words we put out. Thanks for this message.
Yes Lisa, I agree they can have a huge effect upon us & others that should not be taken lightly. Lovely having you drop by today. 😀
My mother used to tell me that she would feel bad almost every night because she was hasty with a word, they do have power. Thanks for reminding us. It’s especially important as we begin to interact with the world again.
Yes, they’re very powerful indeed. It’s lovely having you join me here for a cuppa Liz. 😀
Thank you for this wonderful reminder. And thank you for sharing on the Classy Flamingos blog party.
Thank you Linda & it’s a pleasure 😀
Hi Jennifer,
You’re an amazing woman of God!
I LOVED this post, Jennifer. How many times have I come away from a conversation thinking much the same as you – I could have done better? I could have been more loving and I could have listened more and spoken less. We are all works in progress. We learn from our mistakes so that we can do better the next time.
Thank you Laurie, life is definitely a learning curve isn’t it! And yes I agree we are all works in progress. I enjoyed your visit here my friend, as always! 😀
Jennifer thank you for such a thoughtful and inspiring post! I, too, know the power of words from my professional career, but often have found myself as you did at the beginning of this post, that I could have made better use of my words. Excellent advice here!
Thank you Donna, yes our professions do make us more aware of the power we possess in what we say & how we say it.
Although, I believe this to be a blessing… 😀
Lovely having you drop by today my friend. ♥
