It’s a blend of black tea with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, orange peel, pink pepper & other secret ingredients! Inspired by the tastes of Goa, India! And I have some dried dates, apricots & almonds to enjoy.

Now we’re sipping & munching let’s share our reflection together. 

The saying

Have you ever heard that saying, ‘from here to Kingdom come’? I often heard it when I was growing up.

It came from adults expressing a long period of time or when they felt that whatever the subject at hand was it would last until the end of time.

As with all sayings that become a part of our colloquial vernacular they have an origin. This particular saying actually has its origin in the Lord’s prayer.

The prayer that Jesus taught the disciples whilst here on earth, leaving us such a precious gem of teaching.

We started exploring the treasures of this prayer last week. Let’s continue our exegetical dig now by first examining the entire prayer,

Our Father who is in Heaven,

Holy is your name,

Your kingdom come, your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven,

Provide for us today our daily needs,

And forgive us our transgressions as we forgive others, 

Help us not to stray into temptation, 

But deliver us from the evil one. 

Amen.

Matthew 6: 9-13

‘Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven‘, is where our exegesis will focus today. 

Why pray for God’s Kingdom to come?

You may be asking yourself the following questions;

• Why do we need to pray for God’s Kingdom to come?
• Didn’t Jesus already come to earth, die on the cross as the supreme sacrifice for mankind’s redemption, raise from death & ascend into heaven?
• Didn’t God already send His Spirit, the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to dwell in His believers?
• Doesn’t this all signal that God’s Kingdom has already come on earth?

Well yes it does!

So why do we need to continue to pray this particular part of the Lord’s prayer?

Because as with many places in scripture this line has a twofold meaning. When Jesus taught this prayer to His disciples He hadn’t accomplished His mission here on earth yet. And when He did…

He told us that there is still a time coming when He will return for His church (body of believers) & when He does, this will herald the beginning of the end for this Earth & time as we know it.

John in his experience on Patmos in the Apocalyptic vision was given the following prophetic insight,

“And I saw a new heaven & a new earth; for the first heaven & earth had passed away…& I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God…Then I heard a mighty voice from the throne of God, saying, See, the abode of God is with men, He will live among them; & they shall be His people, & God shall personally be with them & be their God.” 

Revelation 21: 1-3

Thus we continue to pray for His Kingdom to come on Earth as it is in heaven. For evil, though a conquered foe through Jesus work, is still very much alive & present on this Earth! Until the time comes when Jesus returns to judge & forever put away all evils for eternity.

Where when the Kingdom of God is established in all its fullness there will be no evil, no death, no sadness, no fear, no anxiety on the Earth as it is in heaven now, for it is written,

“God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; & death shall be no more, neither shall there be sorrow or mourning, nor grief, nor pain anymore, for the old conditions & the former order of things have passed away. And He Who is seated on the throne said, See! I make all things new…”

Revelation 21: 4 & 5
